John Holmes was born in the kitchen of a remote farmhouse in Pickaway County, Ohio, some 18 miles outside Columbus on August 8th, 1944. The first undertone accompanying his simple birth was noted by an extraordinary quote uttered by the attending midwife: "This baby has three legs and two feet!"
John’s early years were spent growing up in a run-down section of Columbus, nick-named “The Project”. His father disappeared early and his adolescence was stifled by an abusive step-father. Despite this, John learned at an early age of his “difference”, losing his virginity to a baby-sitter and experiencing awkward sex with many of the local schoolgirls. Underage at the time of his induction into the Army, it wasn’t long before John began learning about women and, in particular, what they wanted from him. Upon leaving the Army, John spent time with an army buddy in New York City who schooled him in the business of being a male prostitute. He soon found himself making big money and driving big cars presented to him by grateful society matrons, divorcees and bored house-wives with too much of their husbands money to spend.
Bored with New York and suffering from an ingrained mid-western conscience, John left for the sunny shores of California to make for himself a better, more respectable life. As many a young man full of dreams has found, California was not waiting for his arrival. Drifting from odd job to odd job, John finally settled on obtaining an education and enrolled in UCLA. There he found his niche as a nude model in Art Classes and, through his newly found room-mate Linda, an introduction into “Dirty Movies”. With his obvious talent intact, he soon became a staple of the underground, fledging “Pornography Industry” starring in 1000’s of 8mm loops. A side-note to his early career is that when he was paid for his first film loop, the hundred dollar check he received from the producer bounced. From then on John told everyone within earshot his middle initial "C" stood for Cash!
As the Adult Film Industry took root, John soon found himself in demand as the most sought after male star available on the scene. The Cash began to roll in along with the recognition and amenities inherent in being the worlds #1 Adult Film Star. Including offers to film with the most beautiful and talented Porn Actresses of the time.
It wasn’t too long before the rich life led to a dangerous lifestyle for Big John including drug use with a corresponding drop in his popularity with film producers due to the effects of drugs on his performance. Desperate and running out of cash, John soon began to supplement his income (mostly to supply a growing cocaine habit) with drug running for some very unscrupulous and dangerous individuals. This led to his involvement in the “Laurel Canyon-Wonderland Murders”, a drug related massacre instigated by drug debts and theft. Arrested and jailed for the murders, he was subsequently acquitted. But not before his reputation was ruined and his bankroll depleted.
After his recovery from cocaine addiction. John returned to the industry, forming a production company to some success. Deep in dept due to his past drug habits and at the insistence of an unscrupulous drug dealer, John made his first ‘gay film’ earning a then unheard of paycheck of $1,000,000.00 dollars.
Not long for continued success, John found he had contracted the deadly AIDS virus and died within a year's time in 1988. His last days were spent at a local veterans hospital with wife, Laurie at his side.
Starring in over 2500 feature films and 1000’s upon 1000’s of 8mm loops in his 20 year career, John will always be recognized as the King Of Porn. An accomplished actor and a favorite with Adult Film Fans, John Holmes was…is the quintessential Porn Star. In 1998, John’s Widow, Laurie published his memoirs as PORN KING “The Autobiography of John C. Holmes”.
